The total export value of agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, as well as the trade surplus, has set new records, reaching $62.5 billion (up 18.7%) and $17.9 billion (up 46.8%) respectively. Vietnamese agricultural products are now present in 200 countries and territories, capable of meeting the strictest market demands.
According to Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Lê Minh Hoan, this achievement is the result of a strong shift in production thinking — from agricultural production to an agricultural economy. Localities and enterprises have proactively captured market trends, thus creating a lever for overall industry growth.
Success Across Multiple Fields

According to the General Statistics Office, Typhoon No. 3 caused significant damage to the agricultural, forestry, and fishery production activities of northern provinces. The value of annual crops in affected provinces decreased by 7.2% year-on-year in Q3; perennial crops dropped by 13%. The impact continued into Q4, with seasonal rice output in the north declining by 584.8 thousand tons compared to the previous season. However, despite the damages, the agriculture, forestry, and fishery sector still achieved a 3.27% growth in 2024.
Mr. Đậu Ngọc Hùng, Director of Agricultural, Forestry, and Fishery Statistics under the General Statistics Office, emphasized that several factors contributed to the positive growth:
• Timely guidance and support from authorities at all levels.
• Proactive responses by localities to minimize typhoon damage and restore production quickly.
• Positive contributions from livestock, forestry, and aquaculture activities in regions unaffected by the storm.
Key highlights:
• Pork production rose by 6.6% (Q4 increased by 8.6%). Several provinces in the Central Highlands and Southeastern region saw a significant surge due to large-scale farming projects.
• Poultry production grew by 5.4% for the year (Q4 up 6.4%).
• Timber output increased by 7.9% (Q4 up 9.6%). Wood and wood product exports reached $16.3 billion (up 20.9% from 2023).
• Aquaculture flourished, especially in the Mekong Delta region, contributing over 70% of national production. Shrimp farming rose by 5.6%, pangasius fish farming by 4.8%. Total seafood exports exceeded $10 billion (up 11.9%).
In rice production, although seasonal rice output decreased due to typhoons, total rice output for 2024 remained nearly equivalent to 2023, thanks to increases in the winter-spring, summer-autumn, and autumn-winter crops.
• Rice prices rose by an average of 15.6%.
• Rice export volume increased by 11.2%, and export value jumped 21.2% compared to 2023.

Striving to Maintain Growth Momentum
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will:
• Accelerate trade promotion, market expansion, and technical/trade barrier removal.
• Increase official exports to traditional major markets (China, USA, EU, Russia, Brazil, Japan, South Korea) and tap into potential new markets (Halal food for Muslim countries, Middle East, Africa).
The Ministry will continue active collaboration with other ministries, especially the Ministry of Industry and Trade, to implement FTAs and bilateral agreements effectively. It will also gather and provide valuable market information to businesses and farmers through embassies and trade/agriculture counselors.
Vietnamese agriculture is transitioning toward a circular economy model, though it is still in early stages. Vietnam mostly sells raw rice while byproducts such as husk, bran, and straw could be reused to produce organic fertilizers, planting substrates, and biomass pellets.
Targets for 2025:
• Achieve an agricultural GDP growth rate of 3.3%–3.4%.
• Reach $64–65 billion in agricultural export turnover.
• Ensure over 80% of communes meet the new rural standards.
At the 2024 annual review and 2025 planning conference, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính highly praised the efforts and contributions of the agriculture sector, emphasizing:
• Better strategic planning and institutional improvement.
• Boosting scientific-technological applications, innovation, and digital transformation.
• Developing the green economy, digital economy, circular economy, and knowledge economy.
• Strong contribution to climate change mitigation, particularly in critical regions.
• Ultimately aiming for wealthier, happier farmers, modernized rural areas, and a more advanced agricultural sector.
