Vietnam's fruit and vegetable output reaches 31 million tons, but the processing rate is only about 12-17%. Currently, more than 76% of exported fruits and vegetables are unprocessed, the consumption is still in the form of fresh or preliminary preservation, leading to high post-harvest losses...
The rate of processed fruits and vegetables is still low; Enterprises are not "satisfied" with investment in processing plants due to lack of capital, which is the situation raised by the delegates at the Online Forum "Diversifying processed and preserved fruit and vegetable products in association with the requirements of consumption market” organized by the Executive Team of the Information Forum connecting agricultural production and consumption (Forum connecting agricultural products 970 - Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) on 7/7/2022.
Small processing scale with narrow market
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thach, Leader of the Executive Group of the Forum on Connecting Agricultural Products 970, said that over the past time, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has closely coordinated with many ministries, departments, branches and localities to promote promotion. trade, open negotiations, develop markets, solve problems to promote the export of agricultural, forestry and fishery products.
Specifically, the Ministry is preparing to organize a trade delegation to promote the supply chain of fruits and seafood in China; negotiating and completing procedures for exporting mango and chicken meat to Korea; pomelo, lemon we go to New Zealand; feathers, nests and products thereof, milk and dairy products to China; honey to the EU; survey planting areas, irradiation factories to unify pomelo export plan with the United States.
Mr. Ngo Quang Tu, Department of Agricultural Product Processing and Market Development, said that the country's fruit and vegetable output is more than 11.6 million tons/year, the output of vegetables and beans is nearly 19.3 million tons/year. However, the proportion of processed fruits and vegetables only reaches about 12-17% of the total output.
"Currently, more than 76% of exported fruits and vegetables are unprocessed, the consumption is still in the form of fresh or preliminary preservation, leading to very high post-harvest losses, high rate of spoilage in transit. Due to poor post-harvest storage, lack of minimal equipment (electricity, water, cold storage...), resulting in post-harvest losses of more than 20%".
Mr. Ngo Quang Tu, Department of Agricultural Product Processing and Market Development.
Referring to the reason that fruit and vegetable processing accounts for a low proportion, Mr. Ngo Quang Tu said that many businesses want to invest in building a fruit and vegetable processing factory, but due to lack of production capital, the capital scale is very small (more than 80 years). % of establishments is less than 2 billion dong), so it only invests in small-scale processing with simple equipment.
On the other hand, the more deeply processed products are, the narrower the consumption market will be because consumers still prefer to eat fresh fruit, making it difficult to attract businesses to invest in expanding processing.
According to Ms. Cam Thi Phong, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Son La province, the province currently has more than 82,800 hectares of fruit trees. From the beginning of 2022 up to now, the province has consumed more than 135,000 tons of fruits of all kinds, the main consumption market is domestic with more than 131,900 tons; exported more than 1,600 tons of mangoes, 20 tons of bananas.
Ms. Phong shared that in the period of 2021-2025, Son La province has issued many mechanisms and policies to develop the processing, preservation and consumption of agricultural products such as policies to support cooperatives, businesses, and households. production and construction costs for drying agricultural products and refrigerated containers.
As a result, the whole province has processed 65,000 tons of longan, relieving consumption pressure in the context of the stressful situation of the Covid-19 epidemic. In addition, the province focuses on attracting businesses to invest in developing linkage chains, building processing facilities in the area such as Nafood, Doveco...
Mr. Doan Ngoc Co, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Gia Lai province, said that in 2022, Gia Lai will develop about 35,000 hectares of growing area of leafy vegetables and fruit trees.
As for fruit trees, Gia Lai strives to expand the area to 29,700 hectares planted this year with four key crops of passion fruit, banana, durian, and avocado. In which, the province currently has 8,500 hectares of production according to GlobalGAP standards for export. Currently, the province has 22 establishments and 4 fruit and vegetable processing factories.
“Despite many efforts from the government to the people, the production area of vegetables and fruits of Gia Lai that meets the standards for export is still not high. The production chain as well as the percentage of vegetables and fruits that are applied technical technology for preliminary processing and processing is still low. In the near future, Gia Lai will promote investment attraction in the field of processing and logistics in order to increase the added value of local agricultural products, "said Mr. Doan Ngoc Co.
MULTIPLE PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY SUITABLE FOR COOPERATIVES
At the forum, many businesses introduced processing technologies to create new processed agricultural products, suitable for small-scale production in cooperatives.
Mr. Nong Ngoc Trung, Chairman of the Golden Field Agriculture and Forestry Joint Stock Company, said that the unit has multi-function drying technology, helping to diversify the market and consumption time for some products such as jackfruit and mango in Vietnam. dried form.
The most remarkable point of the Golden Field is that the drying technology is carried by container, and can be moved through areas, even reaching many remote and remote areas. Where agricultural products are harvested, they can be processed on the spot.
“Our technology is well received and appreciated by many customers in Germany, the Netherlands, and Australia. Thanks to advanced disinfection water separation drying technology, Golden Field Company can dry 5-7 tons of agricultural products in a batch. In the coming time, businesses will popularize, transfer and promote processing technology deep into the South for dragon fruit in Binh Thuan, or mango in Dong Thap," Trung affirmed.
"There are four groups of processed products suitable for small and medium scale: dried fruit, frozen fruit, canned fruit, fruit juice. Suitable technologies in fruit and vegetable processing that are suitable for processing fruit and vegetables. Cooperatives and small businesses should invest in such as: heat drying, sublimation drying, freezing, pickling ...
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Anh Tuan, Director of the Institute of Agricultural Electrical Engineering and Post-Harvest Technology.
Mr. Trung added that currently Luc Ngan, lychee is in the main season. The Golden Field is transferring litchi processing to a cooperative in Luc Ngan and the largest lychee barn in the country has received an order of 7,000 tons of this processed lychee from the Taiwan market.
According to Mr. Dang Tran Viet, Sales Director of Sasaki Vietnam, currently, refrigeration drying technologies are a new trend that brings higher product quality with low production costs and is environmentally friendly.
In the past time, Sasaki has supported cooperatives, farmers, and small and medium enterprises to develop suitable products, focusing on meeting market demand.
To accompany, research, develop and transfer technology with customers, Sasaki sets out the process of approaching from contact, capturing information on production status, and customers' wishes; thereby clearly defining product development goals with clear quantification and standards; provide trial drying process to offer the optimal solution for customers.
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Anh Tuan, Director of the Institute of Agricultural Mechatronics and Post-Harvest Technology, in the field of fruit production, processing and trading, small and medium-sized subjects account for 97%, so the direction for the development of modern processing technology, suitable for small and medium scale is essential.
“If we pay attention to small, medium enterprises and cooperatives, we can increase the processing rate and can meet the demand for diversification of processed fruit and vegetable products. In order to double the output of processed fruits and vegetables in the coming years, it is necessary to invest in appropriate technology and investment, "said Mr. Tuan.
